About the Project

The last update to the Peggy’s Cove Land Use Bylaw (“LUB”) was in 2003. Changes need to be made to keep the document current. This is also an opportunity to make it easier to understand, administer, and enforce, all while being appropriate to the needs of Peggy’s Cove residents and businesses.

Peggy’s Cove is a unique and attractive place to live. Therefore, the new LUB must implement land use rules that are practical to the everyday lives of its residents and reinforce the qualities that make Peggy’s Cove unique.

The LUB update is an important opportunity to work with local residents and businesses to explore and establish a vision for the LUB, while staying true to the cultural identity of Peggy’s Cove.

What is a LUB?

A Land Use Bylaw (“LUB”) is a regulatory document that guides land use and development in a community to help meet the vision for the community. It divides land into “zones” that can (but does not have to) control:

  • Types of uses permitted (residential, commercial, etc.)

  • The location and size of buildings (height, setbacks from property lines, etc.)

  • Lot requirements (size, amount of road frontage, etc.)

  • Landscaping requirements

  • Lot coverage

  • Signage

  • Servicing requirements

  • Parking requirements

  • Exterior architectural requirements

A Land Use Bylaw does not control:

  • Building Code (including energy efficiency standards)

  • Interior architectural requirements

Who is Involved?

The Peggy’s Cove Land Use Bylaw is administered by the Peggy’s Cove Commission.

The Commission has hired UPLAND Planning + Design to undertake the work of updating the Land Use Bylaw.

This work is being conducted with the help of residents, business owners, other stakeholders, and the public at large. To find out how you can participate please visit the Participate page.
